The magnificent Italian Garden was designed to display William Astors collection of Italian sculpture and the 35 acre lake at the far end of the garden took 800 men two years to create. There are many water features around the gardens, including the Millennium Fountain which can be found on Sixteen Acre Island, where a splashing water maze has also been built.
Most of the gardens are accessible to wheelchairs as they are mainly on one level and the majority of steps are ramped. The paths are gravel, tarmac or stone. The water maze on 'Sixteen Acre Island' is also accessible for wheelchairs. The steps into the Inner Courtyard make access into the castle difficult as there are no ramps. The ground floor only is accessible to wheelchairs as there are spiral staircases to other floors.
