Winchester was for centuries the capital of Saxon England, and continued to be used by Norman Kings. The statue of Saxon King Alfred stands in a main street. Winchester Cathedral, founded in 1079 is one of the great cathedrals of Europe, its beauty enhanced by the fact that it is set in open parkland. Two of the original gates to the walled city remain and close to the Cathedral is Winchester College, founded in 1382, and one of the oldest schools in the Country. Alternatively, a visit to Southampton for shopping is available for those wishing to visit, perhaps family and friends or the large shopping arcades.
